Man faces drug charges and traffic offenses after fleeing police

On Behalf of | May 14, 2020 | Drug Charges |

A drug arrest in Georgia can carry with it serious consequences if there is a conviction. This can impact a person at any age whether it is a teen or an adult. When that is combined with traffic offenses including fleeing law enforcement, the person should be cognizant of the potential long-term ramifications. In many instances, the person might have made a mistake and caused a relatively minor situation to become exponentially worse. Regardless, it is imperative to think about the future and consider the alternatives when lodging a defense.

A man who was arrested after a chase through several counties is confronted by these concerns. Law enforcement made a traffic stop due to the vehicle not having a tag. As the officer investigated, he claimed to smell marijuana coming from the vehicle. When the driver was asked to exit the vehicle, he sped off. The officer gave chase. State law enforcement was informed of the incident and joined the chase. It ran through several counties until the fleeing driver rear-ended a trooper’s cruiser. This led to a multi-vehicle crash involving three police vehicles and deputy’s car.

There were four children in the vehicle. They ranged from two-months-old to 15-years-old. They were unhurt. Two troopers were injured. The driver was found to have violated probation for a previous felony. In the vehicle were Xanax pills, marijuana, a handgun and cash totaling $2,000. For this incident, he was charged with multiple offenses including reckless conduct, gun possession as a convicted felon, possession of drugs with intent to distribute and more.

Being arrested on drug charges and other allegations will undoubtedly be intimidating. Often, people might make a mistake in trying to escape law enforcement when they are subjected to a traffic stop. This tends to make the situation worse. Still, those who are arrested and charged with a litany of offenses – some of which are felonies – should do whatever possible to achieve a successful outcome.

erhaps there could be a plea bargain to reduce or dismiss some of the charges. There may be avenues available to lodge an effective defense and be acquitted. The man charged in this case has children, making it even more important that he plan a strong defense. The wise first step is to contact a law firm experienced in defending clients facing drug charges.
