It is always tragic whenever anyone passes away because of a car accident, but it especially stands out when it is a young person who had their whole life ahead of them. That's what recently happened in Georgia when a college freshman was involved in a car accident that caused fatal injuries.
The student was actually attending Alabama State University, and the school's president put out a statement on Wednesday, Oct. 17. The accident itself took place on the previous Sunday, per reports.
The student's mother lives in Georgia, and it was her birthday. The teenager went there to celebrate with her, and she was riding in a car during that celebration. That vehicle was then hit by another vehicle, and she passed away from her injuries. She was just 18 years old.
These reports do seem to indicate that alcohol was the root cause of the accident. The driver of the car that hit the teen has now been charged with a DUI. That said, no conviction has been made yet. The process takes time.
The school has offered counseling services to any students who feel that they need them after this sudden and tragic loss. They are going to have a memorial service for her, as well, though the specific details are not out yet.
The president's statement said that her friends, classmates and professors would all miss the young girl. The school offered condolences to the family during this difficult time.
The risks you face on the road often feel random and unavoidable. If you suffer serious injuries or lose a loved one, make sure you know what legal steps to take.
