Social media and sexual predators

On Behalf of | Sep 21, 2018 | Sex Crimes |

With the increase in social media usage and the various platforms available more and more sexual predators are hiding much easier behind the computer screen. Social media accounts include Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat and others. Today, we will take a look at social media and sexual predators to get a better understanding of how sex crimes are moving with technology.

In the last three years, the number of sexual predators online has more than doubled. At the same time, the number of sexual offenses has more than doubled. More than 82 percent of sex crimes committed on the internet have originated on social media networking sites like the ones named earlier in this post.

An even more disturbing statistic out there is that 65 percent of predators used a victim’s social media account to acquire information about the location of their home and where they go to school. To make matters worse, 26 of the offenders have used the social media sites to acquire information about their victim’s whereabouts at any given time.

When it comes to who the victims are of these sexual predators, girls account for 75 percent of the victims associated with crimes initiated on the internet. A large number of those girls are between the ages of 13 and 15.

Sexual predators have been using computers since the day they hit the market decades ago. They are now using social media accounts more often to prey on their victims. Make sure your children are either not on social media yet or know how to protect themselves against various sex crimes in Georgia.
