Examining the steps of a felony criminal case

On Behalf of | May 11, 2018 | Felonies |

Being charged with a crime in Georgia is never an easy situation. Whether you have faced criminal charges before or this is the first time, there could be surprises along the way. There are quite a few steps that occur during a felony criminal case and we will take a look at some of them in today’s post.

The very first step in a criminal case is the investigation. This could go on for months, without you knowing about it, as law enforcement agencies gather evidence and testimony about the crime or crimes that were committed. You might even be accused of committing a crime but not yet arrested and formally charged.

The next step in a felony criminal case is the arrest. This is when an arrest warrant is issued in your name and carried out by officers. Depending on the crime, you might be able to post bail and leave jail within a day or two. If not, you might be held until trial.

You will then be arraigned in court. All you need to do is simply stand in front of the judge and remain quiet. The charges filed against you will be read as the formal complaint made against you is read aloud in the courtroom.

The remaining steps all involve making appearances in court. There are preliminary hearings, appearances in district court, and even a time when you are allowed to enter your plea.

Finding new and effective ways to defend against felony charges in Georgia can help you protect your rights. You don’t want to simply accept the charges since your freedom is at stake. If you successfully argue the charges you could have them reduced or dropped.
